Abstract

Abstract

Our society is currently engulfed in numerous social evils that are corroding it from within like termites. Among these evils, gambling (Qimar) stands out as one of the most destructive forces — its addiction has already ruined countless lives and continues to do so. In the realms of commerce and sports, gambling has emerged as a significant problem, impacting not only economic structures but also social and moral fabrics of society. This makes it imperative to analyze this issue from an Islamic jurisprudential (Shar'i) perspective to protect society from these harms.

While Islam has clearly declared gambling unlawful (haram), the complexities and evolving forms of the modern era have rendered this subject increasingly intricate. In today's world, online gaming, sports betting, and various forms of financial market speculation are rapidly proliferating. The growing popularity of these activities has raised the critical question of whether they conform to Islamic injunctions or not.

This study presents a detailed examination of various contemporary forms of gambling, including online gambling conducted via the internet; sports betting, which involves wagering on the outcomes of sporting events; and financial gambling, encompassing stock market trading and other speculative investment methods. Each of these activities is analyzed in the light of Islamic law (Shariah), with the objective of determining their respective religious rulings (Ahkam). The study endeavors to reach informed conclusions regarding the Shar'i status of these modern-day practices and their implications for individuals and society at large.
